After entering Lanka with Laxmana and Vibhishana on hearing that they could stay in Ayodhya, the place of great riches, comforts and constructions; Rama said "జననీ జన్మ భూమిశ్చ స్వర్గాదపీ గరీయసీ" which means "Motherland is better than heaven".

Long ago, once when Lord Vinayaka was enjoying near Ganga coast, queen Dharmadhwaja was fascinated by Vinayaka and asks him to marry her. Vinayaka disobeys her request to marry him. Queen Dharmadhwaja became angry by Lord Vinayakas disagreement and gave a curse to Vinayaka that he will remain as a bachelor for lifetime.
Inreturn Vinayaka Curses her that she should be with Rakshas for longtime. Queen Dharmadhwaja feels regret and prays Vinayaka for his forgiveness. Vinayaka calms down with her prayings and then says that she will be with Rakshas for sometime and then will get birth as Basil.
Hence Lord Vinayaka dont like Basil to be used in his pooja.

Why do we circle around god in temples?

The word "ప్రదక్షిణ" itself gives the reason for circling around god in temples. Each letter in the word has its own meaning.
ప్ర - Ruin our Sins
ద - Fulfill our desiresక్షి - Bless with a good birth in the next lifeణ - Dispel ignorance and bless us with self-awareness

This much sense is involved in the circle that we make in temples. Lord Vinayaka has circled around his parents and has benefited for the faith he had in circling around his parents. Hence circling around god resembles a circle made around the universe and a spiritual circle.
