Why do people wash their legs before entering into temples?

Have you ever thought why should we wash our legs before entering a temple even though we just had bath fresh at home?

We wear sandals after bath while going to temple. So, leave footwear before entering into temple and wash legs cleanly and completely. Gargle with water and spit out. Thus you enter temple with your complete body clean.
